Arch of Victory and Avenue of Honour

Not quite a garden or a park, Ballarat's Avenue of Honour is significant as the earliest and longest memorial avenue in Victoria. It includes a tree planted for each local soldier who enlisted in World War One between 1917 and 1919.

Today 3,771 of these venerable giants stretch more than 22 km along the Western Highway.

The Avenue is a moving reminder of the tragedy of the First World War and its effect on the community of Ballarat. To this day, it provides a glorious leafy gateway into the city.

The Arch of Victory was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in 1920, funded by 500 female staff at Eleanor Lucas' Lingerie Factory (known affectionately as the "Lucas Girls"). The Arch of Victory stands 17 metres high and can be found on Sturt Street.
