Ballarat Wineries

Ballarat isn't a region that springs to mind when you think of Australian wine regions, but maybe it should be.  Within half an hour on all sides of the city are some of the most awarded boutique wineries in the state.  In fact, Ballarat is earning a stellar reputation for producing some of the best cold climate wines the country has to offer.

Whitehorse Wines

Situated near Buninyong at the southern end of Ballarat's suburbs, Whitehorse occupies a hillside in the middle of picturesque forested country, with eucalypts on one side and pine trees on the other. The specialty here is sparkling wine, inspired by European practice in the case of the white bubblies, and Australian tradition in the sparkling red. The quiet bushland setting of the tidy tasting room is an ideal place to sample these distinctive drops.

Eastern Peake Vineyard

Eastern Peake Vineyard was established in 1983 on a high plateau overlooking the Creswick valley. Located 25 km north-west of Ballarat, the vineyard sits at 430m on top of the Great Dividing Range. The vineyard is exclusively planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Weathered basalt soils and cool marginal climatic conditions contribute to these complex and unique vines.

Mt Beckworth Wines

Mount Beckworth typifies the hard work and enthusiastic endeavour of many of this region's wineries. Paul Lesock's vineyard to Ballarat's north produces wines that are more than just flavoursome - the unwooded Chardonnay shows clean, fresh fruit and some depth; the Pinot Noir is gamey and savoury; and the Cabernet Merlot is an attractive medium-weight wine. Buy a few extra to see what two or three years' bottle age can do to these wines.

Tomboy Hill

Tomboy Hill is a tiny vineyard planted in 1984 within viewing distance(2 km north) of the Eureka Rebellion site. The vineyard is planted in the Burgundian mode, 1mx1.2m grid and low-trellised, and is still, by necessity, hand-pruned, hand-sprayed and hand-picked. Ballarat's climatic similarities with Burgundy influence the mode of viticulture and wine-making, with only chardonnay and pinot noir being grown.

Wrightwick

The wightwick vineyard is 8km north of Ballarat in an area known as Invermay. The vineyard faces north and east and is protected from strong winds by the State forest to the north. The Ordovician soils were formed 400 million years ago and consist of well structured clays and quartz. They have good water holding capacity and moderate fertility. These attributes allow the vines to achieve a balance between vegetative growth and fruit formation. We use organic fertilisers and mulch to improve the soil structure and microbiology.

Did You Know?

Two years after gold was discovered in 1851, miners still couldn't get a legal drink in Ballarat.  Authorities refused to issue liquor licenses, and sly grog shanties sprang up everywhere.  Many brewed a concoction known as "blow-me-skull-off", a liquid dynamite containing methylated spirits, cayenne pepper, opium and rum.

Thomas Bath built Ballarat's first licensed hotel in May 1853 - when even government dwellings were still constructed of canvas or bank-roofed huts.  Bath's Hotel - built on the site of Craig's Royal Hotel - became the social centre of the new town literally overnight.

By 1868 Ballarat supported a population of more than 60,000 people who slaked their thirsts at hundreds of hotels.  It's said that Main Road alone boasted more than 100 hotels and grog shanties to cater to the thirsts of the multitudes.

Today there are more than 50 pubs in Ballarat, some shiny with 21st century renovations and some little altered for over a century.
