Ballarat is easily accessible by road and rail, being serviced by four major Highways - Western Freeway, Midland, Glenelg and Sunraysia Highways and via rail along the interstate rail transport corridor between Melbourne Victoria, Adelaide South Australia and Perth Western Australia. Furthermore, Ballarat's close proximity to Melbourne allows for easy access to metropolitan Melbourne, Tullamarine International Airport, and just one hour from the Port Of Melbourne, Australia's largest container and general cargo port, handling 39% of the nation's container trade.

Recent expansions of the transport capacity of the Region includes: the construction of the Deer Park Bypass on the Western Highway to Melbourne, Regional Fast Rail, a second Passenger Train Station, and future projects include upgrades to the Ballarat Train Station and an Intermodal Freight Hub.
