The local Council's Economic Development Unit, is available to assist commercial activity by private enterprise and governments that deliver sustainable economic growth, drive investment and develop infrastructure, to ensure the whole community continues to prosper.
The City of Ballarat's Economic Development Unit is well placed to serve the needs of our local businesses and industry. Our Unit has a number of projects and initiatives targeted at the small to medium sized business enterprise market, the manufacturing industry, other industry sectors and the wider Ballarat community.

The Unit's professional staff are dedicated to providing assistance and advice to help identify sustainable business and industry development opportunities. The team can offer assistance in a variety of ways, including:
- Advice and referrals;
- Project co-ordination;
- Promotions and marketing;
- Statistical and general information; and
- Strategic planning assistance and advocacy.
The Economic Development Unit believes that the competitive strengths of our regional economy (including manufacturing, information technology, retail, food processing and service industries) make Ballarat an ideal location for business development and investment. The Team continues to work to build upon the region's strengths and extending opportunities for economic development to provide for socio-economic prosperity.
Although Ballarat has experienced strong urban growth, future-planning is underway to ensure minimal impact on the lifestyle of Ballarat residents. The City of Ballarat is engaged in a program of economic development aimed at broadening the overall economic base of the City while maintaining the lifestyle currently available to residents. This will be achieved through economic development with a focus on retaining and increasing employment opportunities, by strengthening and growing existing business and facilitating the establishment of new business where opportunities arise.
